  • What the Sarah Palin Bombshell Means

    Only in our hyperactive news environment can a political reporter feel embarrassed for coming late (a full hour behind the action) to the puzzling Sarah Palin resignation story because he was quietly reading at home on an unofficial national holiday. But quickly scanning the initial news stories, I kept encountering widespread speculation that Palin was abruptly stepping down as governor so that she could concentrate full time on running for president.

  • Palin's Puzzling Move Once Again Roils 2012 Field

    It's like a game of Republican dominoes, falling one by one: Nevada Sen. John Ensign, bumped out of the spotlight by South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, who now must be eternally grateful to Sarah Palin.

    All three had been looking at the 2012 presidential race. The men are non-starters after extramarital affairs; Palin's status is a bit murkier.

    I've seen some analysis that her resignation as Alaska governor later this month will give her the time and opportunity to build a team for 2012. I've seen more convincing analysis that her decision is another example of her odd political judgment, including from Politics Daily's Matt Lewis, and could signal a departure from politics.

    It really would be difficult for even an experienced national politician to handle the flood of attention Palin's been getting. But not only is Palin relatively inexperienced, she seems be drawn to the wrong kind of publicity.

    For instance, she gave an interview to Runner's World, which is fine, but she also posed in Spandex for a slide show. And then there are the feuds -- with the teenage father of her grandson, with David Letterman over an offensive joke he made.

    In her press conference today, Palin even appeared to take a shot at the besieged, lovelorn Sanford, who once visited his Argentine mistress during a trade mission to South America. "I thought about how, well, how much fun some governors have as lame ducks," she said. "They maybe travel around their state, travel to other states, maybe take their overseas international trade missions."

    To call Palin's tenure rocky would be gentle. Just today, before she announced her resignation, the Anchorage Daily News Web site featured a piece on a state health official, who said she was forced out because she and Palin differed on social issues. And then there are the many ethics complaints lodged against the governor. Palin said it has cost her family more than $500,000 to fight them.

    In recent days, Palin furor has included a tough Vanity Fair piece (among other things, the author wonders if she has a narcissistic personality disorder); criticism from conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer, and National Review writer Jonah Goldberg's letter -- posted at midnight, just hours before the surprise announcement -- that starts out, "Dear Governor Palin, you're blowing it."

    Krauthammer, Goldberg and others say Palin was not doing what she needed to do to emerge as a serious contender for 2012 -- that being to go home, lower her profile, govern Alaska well, and educate herself on national and international issues. It's hard to see how quitting as governor after 2.5 years will help.

  • Somebody Famous Who WAS in Appalachia

    Most of the attention on the Appalachian Trail recently has focused on the man who was famously not there -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford. But actress Daryl Hannah, NASA climate scientist James Hansen, and former Rep. Ken Hechler (D-W.Va.) would like you to know that they actually were in the Appalachian Mountains -- and they have the arrest records to prove it.

    They were among more than 30 people arrested last week as they protested mountaintop-removal coal mining at a mine in West Virginia. As the name suggests, mountaintop-removal mining uses explosives to level off the top of a mountain and get to the coal below.

    Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. weighed in on the practice in Friday's Washington Post, calling it "the worst environmental tragedy in American history" and seeking action from the president. Hansen, one of the earliest to warn of the link between climate change and increased greenhouse emissions, has also called for political action, pointing out that the coal produced from mountaintop-removal mining isn't a significant amount -- less than eight percent of coal in the United States.

    Coal is still a major source of energy in the United States, but the environmental cost of mountaintop removal mining doesn't seem to be justified -- particularly since returning the mountain to its original state isn't a possibility. Nor is there a compelling economic rationale for continuing. Once a major employer in the area, the mining industry has become increasingly automated. Kennedy points out that today only 2 percent of jobs in Central Appalachia are related to mining.

  • Sarah Palin's (Bad) Decision To Step Down

    • Sarah Palin has announced she won't seek reelection -- and will step down as Alaska's governor.
    There could be several reasons for her decision, including wanting to leave public life for good. But if this decision was made because Palin intends to run for president in 2012, it does nothing to further her cause.

    Assuming this is her calculus, I once again find myself thinking she has made a bad move. First, why announce it on the eve of Independence Day? Doesn't that seem a bit erratic and dramatic?

    More importantly, though, to become a viable candidate in 2012, Palin needed to return to Alaska, stay out of the limelight, focus on the state and educate herself about the issues. After all, she was unfairly dropped into the middle of a national campaign last time; this time she could prepare. She has done the exact opposite, however. Palin has remained in the national spotlight, and has sought national attention.

    Another factor is that President Obama appears, at this point, to be fairly strong. To be sure, his fortunes could change, but it is probably safe to assume that a two-term governor would have a better shot at an open seat in 2016 than a one-term governor would have at opposing an incumbent president.

    Throughout the presidential campaign, I was a Palin defender. I still like her, but increasingly, I question her team and her strategy. And ultimately, the principal is responsible for that.

    Campaigning for the upcoming presidential elections in Indonesia is set to wrap up on July 8 with the usual bells and whistles: speeches, rallies, and, of course, campaign posters. One set of posters is notable because it features the wives of the Golkar Party candidates with their hair covered -- and The New York Times reports it's become a lightning rod for the campaign. Arguments have centered on whether the Golkar Party is trying to turn the jilbab into a political symbol -- and use religion as a wedge to divide the electorate.

    French President Nicolas Sarkozy also recently caused a stir by using his very first parliamentary address (and, in fact, the first any president has given since 1848) to talk about banning the burqa in France. Of course, the burqa is not the same as the jilbab -- the burqa covers the entire body and the jilbab is a head covering -- but Sarkozy also focused on its symbolic meaning, saying that it was not a religious symbol but "a sign of subservience, a sign of debasement."

    In Indonesia, though, the tradition of wearing the jilbab is not as widespread, and the meaning of it's appearance in this presidential election is not clear. One of the most salient points is made by Jetti R. Hadi, the editor of fashion magazine Noor. "If you ask 10 different women why they're wearing jilbab, you'll get 10 different answers," she told the Times.

    If you didn't think Politics Daily could advance the Mark Sanford story one more inch, think again.

    We have unearthed the customer reviews of Mark Sanford's book, "The Trust Committed to Me" from Amazon.com. Yes, that is the title of the book Sanford wrote in 2000, complete with a forward by Robert Novak and published by the Term Limits Foundation. Plans for another book, "Within Our Limits," were recently scrapped.

    At first, reviewers of "The Trust Committed to Me" seemed to love Sanford's writing:

    * "DFlores" says, "Let me just say that I enjoyed this book tremendously. I most appreciated the author's vivid descriptions of Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina. The sights, the sounds, the people and their customs, he captures them all."

    * "Mahousu" says, "For all that, it's a relatively quick read, (but) this book still takes a while to get going. Sanford does start crossing lines early on, but it's not until the last chapter that he crosses the ultimate line."

    And it goes downhill from there:

    * "Jim LaRock" writes, "Governor Sanford writing about trust is like Jeffrey Dahmer writing a vegetarian cookbook."

    Amazon also helpfully tells us that people who bought this book also bought "Breach of Trust," by Tom Coburn (now a Republican senator from Oklahoma), "Atlas Shrugged," and "Animal Farm."

    And those with a Sanfordian dedication to thrift need not worry. "The Trust Committed to Me" can be yours, gently loved, for $3.98.

    Marriages have been in the news plenty this month: Sarah Palin and her "first dude" / trusted (and maybe only) advisor; Mark Sanford's grim declaration that he was ready to work on falling back in love with his wife; Zahra Rahnavard and Mir Hossein Mousavi's two-for-one campaign in Iran. What all of those very different marriages have in common, though, is that they are -- or were, at least, in Sanford's case -- very much joint professional partnerships, in addition to being marriages. Only the Madoffs seem to want to convince us that his professional life had nothing to do with her.

    The Madoffs are older than most of the other couples I mentioned, and may have come of age when the expectations of what barriers should be put up between career and spouse were different. It's not quite that simple, though. Among the rolls of Bernie's investors are plenty of Ruth Madoff's friends and associates -- even her bone marrow charity. Do I think Ruth Madoff was directly involved in her husband's Ponzi scheme or that she knew precisely what was happening? Probably not. But, being unaware of how your ill-gotten wealth came to be is certainly no justification for keeping it, nor does it absolve her from any responsibility.

    Ruth Madoff is not in a particularly enviable position right now. But, lest we feel too much sympathy for her, remember that she did let millions of dollars be speedily transferred over to her name when it became clear that the house that Bernie built was coming down upon their heads -- seemingly more the actions of a woman desperate to preserve the lifestyle she had become accustomed to than a woman reeling from the finding that her husband of 20 years had deceived her and everyone they knew. While she did eventually give up her claim to approximately $80 million, she still has $2.5 million left over that prosecutors have agreed not to touch -- a much better residual than plenty of Madoff's victims were left with.

  • The Census Comes to Town! Michele Bachmann Locks the Door

    Republicans are having a rough month. Not only is Mark Sanford sighing to anyone with five minutes and a notepad over his lost soul mate -- that would be Maria Chapur, not one of the "handful of women" he's had dalliances with over the course of his marriage -- but Rep. Michele Bachmann (R -Minn.) can't stop railing against her arch nemesis, the U.S. Census Bureau.

    Bachmann told The Washington Times that she will refuse to respond to the upcoming 2010 census with any information other than the number of people living in her house. Understandably, some of her colleagues in the GOP -- also members of the Subcommittee on Information Policy, Census and National Archives -- were less than pleased at this turn of events. "Boycotting the constitutionally mandated Census is illogical, illegal and not in the best interest of our country," said a statement from Republican Reps. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, Lynn Westmoreland of Georgia and John Mica of Florida.

    They may have also been puzzled by Bachmann's opposition since this year's census is a short-form census -- just the basics, including names, ages, ethnicity, length of time in house -- and does not collect the socio-economic data that's been part of the census in the past. Of course, refusing to complete the census is also, by the way, a crime, which Bachmann, as a member of the legislative branch, presumably knows.

    Michele Bachmann may not like the census, but it would be beneficial to her to be included in the count. Not only does census data determine the allocation of state and federal funds that Bachmann would almost certainly like to continue receiving for her district, it also has a use that could hit even closer to home; census data is used to draw districts and distribute seats in the House of Representatives.

  • White House Salaries Revealed: It's Good to be an 'Assistant'

    My mother raised me to believe it is impolite to talk about other people's money. But I bet even Mom would admit a guilty fascination, as I do, with the swollen salary of this major league shortstop or that star of the weekend blockbuster -- especially compared to what we might imagine a neighbor makes a year.

    Of course, when you work in government, your income is often a matter of public record. In fact, for the past 14 years, the White House has been required to deliver a report to Congress listing the title and salary of every worker on the president's office staff. (The president, as is well known, earns $400,000 a year; good work if you can get it.)

    The White House report was delivered Wednesday, and there are no great surprises. The salaries range from $36,000 to $192,934 and appear to be consistent with many offices. You probably wouldn't be shocked to learn that the White House operator makes $42,800, or that a tax counsel brings in $132,914. Someone called the Assistant Shift Leader earns $46,600.

    The Washington Post points out one curiosity: there are 22 aides -- many holding the title "assistant to the president" -- who earn the considerable sum of $172,000.

    Those making the magic number include 28-year-old Jonathan Favreau, the president's wordsmith (director of speechwriting), and 66-year-old James L. Jones, the national security adviser.

    One person in the White House, other than the president himself ($400,000), is listed as making more than $172,000: David E. Marcozzi, the president's director of public health policy, is described as a "detailee" from the Department of Health and Human Services and receives $192,934 for his work. (Vice President Biden and his staff are not included in the White House report.)

    On the other end of the scale are Michael J. Warren, a senior adviser for the department of personnel, and Patricia G. McGinnis, who is listed simply as an adviser to the president. Both make nothing, according to the official salary list.

    The great majority of workers earn between $40,000 and $55,000, which, as the Post points out, "makes the White House quite a modestly paid enterprise for most of the workaholics who spend time there."

    The complete salary list is available on the White House blog, so gawk away. Mom won't mind.

    Fresh off the Supreme Court victory that finally decided the November election in his favor, Senator-elect Al Franken will meet with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on Capitol Hill Monday, Reid just announced. Franken will be sworn-in to the United States Senate next week.

    The 1:00 Reid-Franken confab will be preceded by a photo-opportunity for Washington photogs, when they'll get the first snaps of Franken as Minnesota's newly elected almost-senator.

    The Capitolist will on hand, so we'll report back on the sure-to-be-chaotic scene.
